Energility is focused on reducing energy use as a means to mitigate climate disruption. The individuals who make up the team at Energility are passionate about the environment and each has a unique perspective and take different actions in their home lives to make a difference. So, a few weeks ago the team at Energility was asked how they see their work at Energility or steps they take at home to help Restore the Earth™, the theme for Earth Day 2021.
Future generations were a common theme. Molly said that if we don’t make change, our children/grandchildren will not have a world to exist in. Art talked about teaching his grandkids to respect the earth and to think about the environment and others as a goal. Justin talks about how his “wife has always been very good at paying attention to the low-cost things like managing the thermostat settings and using fans, window shades, etc, in lieu of running the cooling system.” Our families can be both a great inspiration for doing better as well as being partners in making a difference. Who inspires you?
Art has “been trying to save energy in facilities pretty much my whole 37 year career on university campuses. Continuing to do so with Energility and focusing specifically on energy conservation should allow me to expand that impact.” Justin found his passion for energy efficiency while working in a large office building in downtown Columbus and it helped guide his career path. Justin states that “working with and around people in the industry keeps the conversation going. Sharing of ideas helps keep you informed of technology updates and actions peers are taking in their homes.” Art and Justin have both been able to use their careers to make a difference. What can you do at your place of employment to make a difference?
Each person gave a few of examples of actions they take in their home lives so maybe this will be inspiration for a change you can make too.
Art
- getting back to using his own bags for groceries and paying attention to where items come from, buying things in season, reducing red meat consumption
- plant more native and wildlife supporting plants in his yard.
- participating in the Licking River Clean Up and just taking a section of road, or other public area to pick up trash. – there’s an app for that Litteratti (https://www.litterati.org/)
Justin
- maintaining equipment and keeping it in good working order
- take advantage of utility rebates. His family was able to get all of the lighting in their house replaced with LEDs for less than $100
- repairing, repurposing, recycling, and composting. His family works to reduce what they put in the waste stream.
Molly
- walking whenever possible instead of driving. Carpooling.
- switch from plastic containers to glass – her family uses LOTS of bowls and covered containers, so this was major step for her family.
- replaced plastic wrap with beeswax covers
Everything we do makes a difference-even tiny steps.
