There is a need for some plastics in our lives – think of syringes for injections, caution tape, and reusable plastic water bottles (much cheaper than stainless steel). However, we can reduce our use of many single use plastics. Energility team recommendations:
Bring your own dish to use for leftovers from dining out.
Choose restaurants that put your leftovers in reusable plastic containers. These are great for pool snacks and packed lunches.
Look on the bottom of clear plastic cups. Cups that are a ‘2’ plastic that can be taken home and recycled. This is a relatively new service here in Columbus.
If you go to a restaurant, dine in instead of ordering takeout, as many of the plastic things you get offered are a result of getting takeout.
If you are getting takeout, decline plastic cutlery. Most online ordering systems are allowing you to skip the cutlery by checking a box.
Bring your own cup – keep a reusable one in your trunk so if you stop unexpectedly or forget one, you always have one.
Say no to straws. Carry your own in a handy pouch if straws allow you to better enjoy your beverage.
Use your own reusable grocery bags – keep a few stored in your car so you can’t forget.
When buying groceries, avoid pre-packaged single servings – opt instead for large containers where you can portion food out.
Minimize consumption in general in all areas of your life (plastic is in almost everything, so if you don’t need it, don’t get it).
